LEISURE SOCIETY SPONSORS 14th ANNUAL COSTA MESA WOOD RACQUET CLASSIC
A Fun-Filled and Vintage Family Labor Day Weekend to Beneet The John Wayne Cancer Foundation
Costa Mesa, CA – For the seventh consecutive year, Leisure Society will partner with The Wood Racquet Foundation to celebrate the preservation of traditions, as well as the success and growth in cancer research with the 2012 Costa Mesa Wood Racquet Classic benefiting the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. Taking the meaning of classic to hear t, this premiere fundraising tennis tournament
calls for the use of wooden racquets and vintage tennis attire, bringing an extra dose of spirit to those par taking in the tournament both on the courts and in the cheering sections.
Entering the four tenth year, the Wood Racquet Classic is a chance for friends and family to come together in an active, fun and philanthropic environment. The Labor Day Weekend event begins on Saturday with Day 1 of the tournament, bringing out the winner in all of us at the serene Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach with matches between men, women and children divisions. After receiving a bronzing dose of sun, the day will close with a reception following the tournament at the Boathouse Collective, 1640 Pomona Ave., Costa Mesa, CA 92627.
This year, rise with the sun on Sunday to witness the championship tournament at the adjacent Costa Mesa estates owned by Clay Peterson and Johnny McCray who combine their yards each year to create the special venue for the Wood Racquet Classic at 431 and 437 East 20th St. Allow for a day of variety, as more than tennis is on the itinerar y with a silent auction (where past items have included couture gowns and handmade sur f boards), a photo booth to capture memories full of wooden racquets and an area of fun for the children. Following a day of outdoor enjoyment, the annual closing gathering will take place at A Restaurant to celebrate the close of the fundraiser…and guests retire their vintage tennis attire until next year.
“The annual Wood Racquet Classic has always been my way of honoring family and dear friends affected by cancer. That’s why working with The John Wayne Cancer Foundation is so important…they think outside of the box when it comes to cancer research. That’s probably where the cure lies”, says co-founder Johnny McCray. “Clay Peterson and I founded this tournament and have been thrilled with the support received from our colleagues and the community. With the 2006 launch of The Wood Racquet Foundation, we now have a larger avenue for donations to cancer research, allowing the weekend to continue to grow and thrive.”
Designer of Leisure Society and CEO of Baumvision, Shane Baum, has eagerly par ticipated in the tournament since 2000 and is a longtime friend of Clay and Johnny. He adds, “My business operates with the belief that philanthropy must be a key component in life, so witnessing this tournament bring together an entire community has always touched me. The Wood Racquet Classic, with its vintage motif, brings out the best in people (and fashion) for the ideal event to end the Summer Season.”
General and VIP tickets var y in cost between $27 and $151.
Tickets can be purchase online at www.woodracquetclassic.com or in person at the door.
About the Wood Racquet Foundation: Clay ton Peterson and Johnny McCray started the Costa Mesa Wood Racquet Classic four teen years ago in 1998 as a fun family tennis tournament at the end of the summer. After the loss of Clay ton’s mother, Sally Peterson, and the McCrays’ long-time family friend and tournament umpire, Grant Baldwin, to cancer, they formed the foundation in 2006 and turned the traditional backyard tennis tournament into a fundraiser. The Wood Racquet Foundation donates proceeds from the annual Wood Racquet Classic to the John Wayne Cancer Foundation.
